On Friday, October 19, a speeding train ran over a large group of people while they were watching fireworks during a religious festival in northern India, according to "TIME." The train has killed at least 50 to 60 people.

The festival took place on the outskirts of Amritsar, a city in Punjab state. The event displayed the burning of Ravan effigy on the occasion of Dussehra. During the event, fireworks began, and, in order to avoid the flames, some people started retreating towards the train tracks, reported "Times Now News." A large group quickly grew.

Shortly after, two trains arrived from the opposite direction at the same time, giving only seconds for the crowd to move out of the way. According to reports, one train is reported to be the culprit, and that train didn't blow the whistle as it sped through the crowd. That train didn't even stop after the collision, according to an eyewitness, reported "TIME."

The state's top elected official, Amrinder Singh, said that at between 50 and 60 people have died. 30 bodies were removed from the scene by Friday evening, local time.

The injured were rushed to nearby hospitals.
