So you think California's high-speed rail is dead? Not so fast. All it took was for President Trump to demand California pay back the 3.5 billion federal dollars for the governor to start walking back his earlier statement.
Less than one day after newly-elected California Governor Gavin Newsom announced the death of the controversial high-speed rail project in his state, President Trump made a bold move on behalf of the American taxpayer, leaving Governor Newsom flabbergasted and at a loss for words. You might even say he had a $3.5 billion panic attack!
The project, which has been in the works for more than a decade, was the untouchable ‘darling’ of liberal politicians in the state.
The train, which was to eventually connect Los Angeles with San Francisco, was supposed to help reduce the carbon footprint of all those cars and all those airplanes that would no longer be carrying its residents back and forth between the two locations, and a few stops in between.
On Tuesday, in his State of the State address, Newsom made the startling announcement that the project would no longer be completed, leaving the Left stunned but many California taxpayers saying, "It's about time!!"
The original price tag for the massive ‘boondoggle’ - as it was often called in the media - was proposed to California taxpayers in 2000 as $20 billion. That number jumped to $33 billion by 2008.
“When California voters approved a massive high-speed rail line in 2008, they were promised an ambitious project that eventually turned into the notorious ‘train to nowhere.’”
Now, due to nonstop delays and rapidly rising costs, that 2008 figure has ballooned astronomically to, by some estimates, upwards of $100 billion.
On Tuesday, Governor Newsom seemed to finally read the writing on the wall and announced that the rail would not be finished…because it is too expensive.
“Let’s be real, the current project as planned would cost too much and, respectfully, take too long. Right now, there simply isn’t a path to get from Sacramento to San Diego, let alone from San Francisco to L.A. I wish there were.”
After he got the announcement out of the way, the newly-elected governor barely had time to breathe a sigh of relief before President Trump pointed out an unfortunate bit of reality.
Remembering the three and a half billion dollars of federal money that was already given to California for the failed project, Mr. Trump went straight to Twitter and pulled no punches with Newsom and the state of California:
“California has been forced to cancel the massive bullet train project after having spent and wasted many billions of dollars. They owe the Federal Government three and a half billion dollars. We want that money back now. Whole project is a ‘green’ disaster!”
Then, after considering the President’s ultimatum, Newsom posted a statement that completely contradicts what he JUST told the voters of California:
"Fake news. We’re building high-speed rail, connecting the Central Valley and beyond.
"This is CA’s money, allocated by Congress for this project. We’re not giving it back.
"The train is leaving the station — better get on board!
"(Also, desperately searching for some wall $$??)"
But Americans are not falling for Newsom's political double-speak, proving once again, that they stand squarely in the President's corner:
“Gavin Newsome just ended the high-speed rail dreams of the looney left in CA from San Fran to LA. Wanna guess why? Bc he knows their days of stealing from the other 49 states for their leftist utopian plans are OVER under this @POTUS! If you want to go green; use your own green”
“So, now that Gavin Newsome is canceling the High Speed Rail project in California, when will he be refunding the $3.5 Billion he took from the Federal Government?”
“@realDonaldTrump Gavin Newsome is not building the CA high-speed rail which he received $3.5 billion Federal funds and will not send the money back. Send a collection agent and use it to #BuildTheWall so #CrimeWillFall 🙏🏻🇺🇸♥️🗽”
“Gavin Newsome, Gov of CA, REFUSES to return high speed rail project $ to the federal gov! Fed gov must dock federal $ going to CA until the $ has been paid back to fed gov, since Newsome won't willingly return it. Trump can use this recovered money for the border wall”
@AOC Gavin Newsome is pulling the plug on the high-speed rail system in California because it will cost 77 Billion -and there is no way to pay for it. Any ideas? The millionaires are leaving the state. Do you think the illegal immigrants can pay for it?
“The massive government FRAUD and WASTE in California and other democrat run states is atrocious.
“American taxpayers demand California’s Governor Newsom return our 3.5 BILLION dollars. We have a wall to build.”
