While the hospital is the place of choice for most soon-to-be mothers, Seth Meyers’ wife, unfortunately, had to deliver their baby in an apartment lobby.
During his most recent "Late Night" show, Seth shared a very stressful event he and his wife, Alexi Ashe, endured.
What felt like a "totally normal Sunday," Seth, Alexi, and Alex's mother were all home. With Alexi and her mom upstairs, Seth was feeding his oldest son lunch.
"We have to go to the hospital now!" screams Alexi's mother as she rushing down the stairs.
Understandable frantic, Seth calls an Uber and tries to calm his wife. As they make their way down the elevator and into the lobby, Alexi stops.
"I can't get in the car. I'm going to have the baby right now. The baby is coming," Alexi said.
Seth jokes now that his wife "looked like someone who was hiding a baby in a pair of sweatpants." Then within seconds, the baby's head was out. Alexi decided that she was just going to have the baby right there. Her family did their best to try and cover her, and within a minute, the "baby was just out."
"I called 911, and over the course of a minute conversation, I said, 'We're about to have a baby! We're having a baby! We had a baby," Seth said. "I went from someone calling in about an emergency to just sharing good news with a stranger. Like, 'Yeah, it's a boy!'"
Seth continued on thanking everyone who helped including the New York Fire Department, New York Police Department, and their neighbors. Their neighbors even went to grab blankets, put them in the dryer, and gave them to Alexi and the baby so they would stay warm.
The couple decided on the name of Axel. His middle name is Strahl which is Alexi's mother's maiden name.
"I've never met my wife's grandparents, but I've heard so much about them, and they were Holocaust survivors who met the day after they were liberated. They met at a hospital in Austria.
"Days like this, when someone is born, you have such appreciation for everyone in your lineage who lived so that you could have this moment. So, we're so happy to give him this name for people who obviously had to work so hard to do that," Seth said as he fought back tears.
Seth concluded his segment by talking about his wife: "She's so amazing. My kids, I haven't known them very long, but I can guarantee I'm going love them unconditionally forever. As far as the speed in which she took this guy and had him on her, I just watched him like, 'That kid's going to be fine forever because of her.' She's really amazing."
Congratulations on such a blessing! God is good!
