Tim Young and Paul Hullings had an exhausting day of fighting fires. It was a 12-hour shift of clearing out fires that brought them to a local dinner at six in the morning.
When a waitress came to their table, the two men asked for their strongest coffee. As the morning continued at the cafe, the waitress, Liz Woodward, overheard the two firefighters talking about their hectic night fighting fires.
Eventually, Tim and Paul went up to the hostess podium to pay their bill. Instead of receiving a tab, they were greeted with a note, which reads:
"Thank you. Your breakfast is on me today. Thank you for all that you do, for serving others and for running into the places everyone else runs away from. No matter your role, you are courageous, brave and strong. Thank you for being bold and badass everyday! Fueled by fire and driven by courage — what an example you are. Get some rest! - Liz."
The two firefighters were so thankful for Liz's kind gesture and didn't know what to do. They ended up talking with Liz for some time, getting to know her and her life. Come to find out, her father, Steve, is quadriplegic and has been paralyzed for over five years.
Liz set up a donation page last winter to help purchase a vehicle that was wheelchair accessible so she can take her father places around town. Tim reached out to people on Facebook explaining the wonderful experience he had with Liz and continued on about how we can all help Liz's father.
“Such a selfless and kind act," Tim said. "I definitely urge my friends to make a trip out and support the business, and if Liz happens to be your waitress, tip big. Turns out, the young lady who gave us a free meal is really the one that could use the help.”
Liz and her family were hoping to raise $17,000 for the new vehicle, but after just a few days they reached more than $70,000. The Woodward's were so gracious of everyone's donations and were grateful for the efforts put forth by the two firemen.
“All I did was pay for their breakfast," Liz said. "I didn’t expect anything more than a smile. It goes to show that you just have to be kind to each other and that even the smallest gesture can change a life.”

This story goes to show that even just a small gesture can really impact someone. We should never go into a good deed with the expectation of receiving something. Do a good deed, pay it forward, and make someone smile. Kind acts don't need to cost more than a coffee or need to cost anything at all. Offering a hand, your time, or even the door will make someone's day that much brighter because of you.
