Many people tuned into the royal wedding and watched Meghan Markle and Prince Harry wed. With such popularity, you would expect the newlyweds to receive a large number of wedding gifts.
Well, they did! $9,000,000 worth—many of them from well-known companies looking to see the couple tout their wares.
Any couple would be thrilled with this many gifts (or in my case, a bit overwhelmed), but this couple chose to return most everything.
Business Insider states, "While Prince Harry and Markle are no doubt appreciative of the gifts given to them in celebration of the royal wedding on May 19, they aren't allowed to keep most of them."
But why? Simple. It's royal protocol.
The Kensington Palace official rules state, "Gifts offered by private individuals living in the UK not personally known to the Member of the Royal Family should be refused where there are concerns about the propriety or motives of the donor or the gift itself."
Ok, so that clearly rules out all the companies that gave them gifts. The Queen then, of course, would be ok, along with any other family member or friend. Phew!
So what do Meghan and Harry think about this? They are perfectly ok with it!
"The couple didn’t really want presents anyway. Back in April, Kensington Palace announced that in lieu of gifts, Prince Harry and Meghan Markle would like well-wishers to donate to a charity instead," states one source.
