On Tuesday, September 18, a woman was fatally stabbed by a man while she was jogging in a "very safe neighborhood," according to multiple reports.
According to surveillance video, recently engaged, 35-year-old Wendy Karina Martinez stumbled into a nearby Chinese restaurant in Washington D.C. on Tuesday night after her attacker stabbed her multiple times in the neck, according to police. Martinez tried to show customers at the restaurant to her attacker, but he had already fled the scene.
Emergency personnel rushed to the scene and transported Martinez to a local hospital where she later died from her injuries. When police arrived, they found a bloody knife at the scene where the suspect dropped it.
"They [witnesses] tried to provide medical assistance to her. Unfortunately, she was taken to a local hospital where she was pronounced dead," D.C. Police Chief Peter Newsham said Wednesday. "It is more likely a random act than anything else, but we're going to look at all possibilities."
"It's horrible to see something like this happen in the city," he added, describing the area as a "very safe neighborhood."
According to "Fox News," the suspect had been arrested and taken into custody Wednesday night, officials said Thursday. Newsham said in a press conference that 23-year-old Anthony Crawford has been charged with first-degree murder in the fatal stabbing of Martinez.
Crawford was found at a park by police who then took him in for questioning. The suspect has a criminal history and is "not cooperating" with officials. He was living in Northwest D.C. and was not homeless. He was last seen wearing a mustard-colored shirt, dark colored pants with sandals and white socks. A "very distinct look" Newsham said.
"It looks like it was an unprovoked attack," Newsham said. "This happened very quickly. Surveillance video was really the key to closing this case,"
“We are deeply saddened by this senseless tragedy," Martinez's family said. "Wendy Karina Martinez was the light of our lives. Not only was she an avid runner, but she was a devout Christian, a wonderful friend, and a driven professional. Everything you hope that a daughter and a friend could be. She was also excited to be planning her upcoming wedding to her fiancé, Daniel Hincapie. They were engaged just last week.”
